What
do I do with my old computer monitor or television?
In April 2000, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts adopted a first
in the nation approach to reuse and recycle discarded computer monitors
and televisions. Cathode ray tubes (CRT's), the leaded glass picture
tubes found in monitors and televisions, are now banned from disposal
in Massachusetts landfills and waste combustors due to their high
lead content. For this reason, many solid waste haulers have ceased
collection of CRT devices from households.
Usually, the City of Salem will take these items at the hazardous
waste collection day. But, with the recent drastic budget cuts there
has been no confirmation that this event will take place.
In the meantime we would like to offer some options for residents
that would like to or need to have these items removed from their
property
